Area veterans honored for service

Economic times may be bad, but patriotism appears to be soaring to new heights in Thomson. This year's Veterans Day activities had much more attendance than in years past.

Thomson City Council approves budget for 2010
After weeks of sifting through documents and crunching numbers within various departments, the City of Thomson has unanimously approved a budget for the year 2010 that totals $19,089,291.

Local, state and federal law enforcement officers raided the home of a prominent businessman in the Raysville Community of McDuffie County, searching for explosive devices, weapons and illegal drugs last Friday, The McDuffie Mirror has learned.

School officials assist woman in accident

Two McDuffie County school officials went to the aid of an injured woman, who was trapped inside her wrecked pickup truck for about 30 minutes after she lost control at the wheel, flipped and careened into a creek bed on Lincolnton Road near Thomson last Wednesday.

Georgia's newest lawyers sworn in

A history-making occasion took place in the McDuffie County Superior Courtroom last Friday when four recent graduates of law school were sworn in as Georgia's newest lawyers.

New finance director to begin Nov. 30
Darlow Maxwell soon will assume a new job -- that of finance director of McDuffie County. Mr. Maxwell, who has been serving as city accountant/chief financial officer for the City of Doraville, is expected to begin his new job on Monday, Nov. 30.

Evans eager to interact with people
Kelly S. Evans, who has served as IT director for the City of Thomson and McDuffie County for the past 6 1/2 years, is leaving to accept another job in local government, The McDuffie Mirror has learned.

Okefenokee Joe still entertains with lessons on the outdoors

Though his real name is Joe Flood, most people know him simply as "Okefenokee Joe" -- a man who teaches lessons to others about the importance of the environment. He performed at Sportsman's Festival in Warrenton last Saturday.

Tough to treat medical needs equally
ATLANTA -- Figures released Thursday show Georgia taxpayers saved between $123 million and $140 million in the last fiscal year because of the state's own health-care reform of sorts. The federal share of savings is even greater.
