A report of a 14-year-old girl having been sexually assaulted prior to Christmas is being probed by the McDuffie County Sheriff's Department.
The alleged crime, which reportedly occurred at a residence on the west end of the county on Dec. 16, had not yielded an arrest as of last Friday, local authorities said.
Deputy Al Reeves spoke to a relative of the victim who told him that the girl was sexually attacked by a man who walked into her bedroom and awakened her. The name of the person responsible for the reported crime was provided to the lawman.
The relative said the victim told her about being attacked on Sunday, Dec. 23. The woman didn't notify authorities until Wednesday, Dec. 26, shortly after 8 p.m.
In his report, Deputy Reeves said he interviewed the victim who told him that following the attack, the man "very harshly" told her that she better not tell anyone. "The victim stated that she did not tell anyone for a while out of fear," Deputy Reeves noted in his report.
The deputy said he later contacted a caseworker with the McDuffie County Department of Family and Children Services so that agency could look into the case, since it involves a child. His report also was forwarded to Deputy Sgt. Mike Hobbs so it could be assigned for further investigation.
The case since has been turned over to sheriff's Investigator Larry Adaway.
