Mr. Hester, who began his postal career in Augusta as a city carrier in September 1974, served as a postmaster in Warrenton before moving to the Thomson branch.
Surrounded by family and co-workers, Mr. Hester was honored for his service to Thomson at a gathering Thursday morning at the post office.
Billy Pierce, manager of post office operations for the South Georgia district, presented Mr. Hester with a certificate of appreciation and wished him well on his retirement.
"You will be missed by your staff, customers and fellow postmasters," Mr. Pierce said.
Mr. Hester, who lives in Evans, plans to spend time with his extended family in the Augusta area, and will undertake some home projects, said his wife, Ruth, a retired postmaster in Harlem.
"I'm really going to miss Thomson. You've got really good people here," Mr. Hester told those gathered to honor him.
