Construction projects should stay high on to-do lists

2004 looks to be a year of new capital projects in McDuffie County.

Specifically, officials are looking into building a gymnasium at Sweetwater Park, a new gym at Thomson High School will open, renovation of the Dearing Gym will hopefully get underway, and the county and city of Thomson hope to get together in making plans for a city/county government complex.

In other words, this is a critical year for McDuffie County. The cities of Thomson and Dearing have a long, positive history of working with McDuffie County, and there's no reason that such cooperation should stop, especially with so many pivotal projects on the horizon.

While the new gym at Thomson High is being handled by the McDuffie County Board of Education, all of the other projects will require a certain amount of cooperation. Thomson-McDuffie Department of Recreation officials will need to work closely with the city of Dearing with regards to the Dearing Gym and put together a usage plan that will benefit all citizens of McDuffie County.

As for the new gym at Sweetwater Park, dollars from the joint city of Thomson and McDuffie County sales tax collection will be used, which means that Thomson should have some say as the plans become finalized.

And then there is the municipal complex, which in a perfect world will be where taxpayers will be able to handle every kind of city of Thomson and McDuffie County business imaginable, all under one roof.

This is an important time in McDuffie County, which means not only will residents soon be the recipients of some outstanding new and renovated facilities, but it's also a tremendous opportunity for the entire county to continue working together and grow as one.
