McDuffie County has received nearly $15,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that $4.5 million dollars has been awarded to the State of Georgia to help prevent homelessness, and feed and shelter the nation's hungry and homeless.
According to a press release, the only other nearby counties to receive emergency food and shelter funds were Richmond County - $134,000; Washington County - $12,000 and Jefferson County - $11,000. The funds are used in more than 2,500 cities and counties across the country to supplement food, shelter, rent, mortgage and utility assistance programs for people with non-disaster related emergencies.
Across America, the current allocated funds have provided more than 35 million meals and 1.3 million nights of lodging, 99,000 rent and mortgage payments and 232,000 utility bill payments.
