The "right" direction

Dear Editor,

We all seem to take pleasure in having some kind of New Year's resolutions. Yet, many times, in the political process we are allowing representatives elected by less than 50 percent of the eligible voters make these decisions for us. In our representative form of government, nothing is more important than the individual citizen's participation in voting his or her beliefs. The elections in November 2006 and 2007 promise to be very important for all citizens at the local, state and federal levels.

Here is one conservative citizen's opinion concerning major issues facing the country listed in order of their priority:

  • War on Terrorism - An official declaration of war needs to be authorized by Congress and signed by the President.

  • Fair Tax Passed - This bill will allow all people to keep more of their money away from the federal withholding tax.

  • Deptartment of Homeland Security - This is an impossible job. We need to disband this department and return the individual agencies to their pre-9-11-01 status. Terrorists are winning by making us change our lifestyle. The recent natural disasters in our country have shown how ineffective this arrangement is. We need to reevaluate federal responsibilities. The state and local governments should have primary responsibility for the needs and care of their citizens in a disaster.

  • Tort Reform - The loser should pay in civil/frivolous actions. The court schedule should run with reasonable timeliness and with few delays for any reason.

  • Illegal Immigrants - Borders must be controlled and people in the country identified. People who don't comply must leave.

  • Prisoner Overcrowding of Jails - No excuses. State and Federal officials need to act now and clean up this situation.

No matter what your opinion is, I urge everyone to be resolved to vote whenever elections are held.
