"This was all grey and ugly," she said, standing on a wooden deck between a series of now-sky-blue portable classrooms behind Maxwell Elementary School Friday morning.
She said she noticed the dreary deck and portables while her son, Zachary Rabun, was in pre-k classes at the school last year. Her daughter, Sadie Rabun, will attend Pre-K at Maxwell next year.
"We just wanted to make it nice for the teachers to come to work," Mrs. Boyum said.
Several local businesses and individuals donated paint and other materials for the work, she said. Eventual plans call for a gutter system to stop rain from puddling on the deck and surrounding walkways.
For now, Mrs. Boyum is working on a rainbow, stick figures and an alphabet. She said much of the artwork is designed around lessons students will learn in the portable classrooms.
Anyone wanting to volunteer to help Mrs. Boyum paint and sand should call Patsy Jones at 986-4894.
