Planners of the Dearing Mayfest -- as it is now being called -- met on Jan. 11 to continue organizing the May 7 event. Activities include a tractor parade through town and car show at 9 a.m., performances by area musicians and children, craft vendors, an art show and a hamburger cook-off that evening.
The stage and the vendors will be located in the old Dearing Elementary School Driveway and along Adams Street. Sheriff's Deputies will be on hand to assist festival-goers with crossing the highway.
A cookbook of Dearing recipes will be compiled and sold at the festival. A quilt of Dearing landmarks is also being made for the event. All of the proceeds will go toward restoration of the Dearing Gym.
Organizers are still looking for vendors and for volunteers to help with the event. Vendors should contact Johnette Bell at 595-3087. Those interested in the parade should contact Gladys Rodgers at 556-6313. Sean Kelley is in charge of the hamburger cook-off; he can be reached at 556-1935.
The organizers of the festival meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month in the Dearing City Hall at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in helping should come to the next meeting.
