The McDuffie County Health Department recently received confirmation of a rabid raccoon in McDuffie County.
A Goett Road resident's dog was exposed to the raccoon on January 14, according to Health Department officials. The Georgia Public Health Lab returned positive rabies notification on January 18 after the Health Department sent the raccoon off for testing.
The dog did not have a current rabies vaccination and was euthanized by a local veterinarian.
The Health Department advises all pet owners to have each animal vaccinated for rabies by a registered veterinarian. It is also recommended that wild animals be avoided. Any contact by people or pets with wild animals should be reported to the McDuffie County Health Department at 595-1740.
