It may be only one hour, but it's the beginning of much bigger things.
The kickoff meeting for the 2006 Relay for Life of McDuffie County will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 31.
"I encourage anybody who wants to participate, either to have a team or to help in any way, to attend our first meeting. Our meeting should last only one hour, but we will prepare for this year's event by reviewing goals and getting teams in place," said Bob Knox, Mayor of Thomson and Relay Co-Chair.
McDuffie County ranked first in the nation in 2004 and second in 2005 for dollars raised per capita for the relay which benefits the American Cancer Society. Last year, McDuffie raised over $220,000 with 2500 people participating.
The 2006 Relay for Life will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 12, and will last until 9 a.m., Saturday, May 13 at the Thomson High School Track. McDuffie's 2006 theme is "And The Beat Goes On," and goals are to raise $200,000 with 53 teams and 2300 participants.
"We are looking forward to another great year. We've had two tremendous years back-to-back, and I'm sure we're going to have another great one this year," Mayor Knox said.
The Kickoff meeting will be at the Augusta Technical School Thomson-McDuffie Campus auditorium, 388 Tech Drive NW, Thomson. For more information, contact Relay Co-Chairs Peggy Willis at 986-4400, ext. 5473 or Bob Knox at 595-1841.
