Fighting for perfection: Lady Bucs off to best start in school history

The winning streak for the Briarwood Academy Lady Buccaneers has extended to 15 games, as the squad has posted several key victories over very tough region opponents.

Coach Clayton Parrish's Lady Bucs currently own a 15-0 overall record and a 7-0 region mark. Both of these standings are the best the girl's program has ever experienced.

Senior Anne Wills is also continuing her record-breaking year, as she has scored 201 points in the last 11 games to increase her career points total to 1,809.

The Lady Bucs captured their 10th victory of the year on Jan. 11 with a 67-33 win over the Brentwood Lady Eagles in Sandersville. Briarwood scored in double figures in this contest in each of the four quarters.

Briarwood controlled a 13-12 lead after one quarter of play and a 29-19 advantage at halftime. The Lady Bucs outscored Brentwood 22-8 and 16-6 in the second half to post the 34-point victory.

Wills was the leading scorer for the Lady Bucs with 20 points. She was followed by Ashley Pickard with 18 points, Katie Reese with 13 points, Cassie Pickrell, Alyssa Sutton, and Beth Gerlach with four points each, Blythe Ansley with three points and Mallory Jo Bradshaw with one point.

On Jan. 14, the Lady Bucs traveled to Monticello and defeated the Piedmont Academy Lady Cougars by a 62-35 score. This victory increased Briarwood's overall record to 11-0.

Briarwood took an early 14-0 lead after one quarter of play, before outscoring the Lady Cougars 25-8 in the second period to own a 39-18 advantage at halftime. The Lady Bucs outscored Piedmont 14-7 in the third period to continue the aggressive scoring.

Three Lady Bucs scored in double figures to lead the team. Wills was the top scorer for the team with 18 points. She was followed by Bradshaw with 13 points, Reese with 12 points, Ansley and Sutton with four points each, Pickrell with three points and Courtney Price, Pickard, Gerlach and Macey Smith with two points each.

Wills was perfect in the free throw department with an effort of seven-for-seven. Reese went two-for-four at the free throw line.

The 12th victory of the season for Briarwood came on Jan. 15 in Forsyth with a 55-31 win over Monroe Academy. The Lady Bucs scored in double figures in the first three quarters.

The Lady Bucs opened the game with a massive 21-2 lead after one quarter of play, and they owned a 33-8 lead at halftime. Briarwood scored 14 and eight points respectively in the third and fourth quarters to cruise to the win.

Pickrell was the leading scorer for Briarwood with 12 points, She was followed by Wills and Price with eight points each, Reese, Leslie Lynam and Gerlach with five points each and Pickard and Whitney Carani with four points each.

The Lady Bucs traveled to Waynesboro on Jan. 17 and defeated the lady Spartans of Edmund Burke Academy 45-24. This win increased Briarwood's overall record to 13-0.

Briarwood Academy outscored EBA 10-6 and 13-9 respectively in the first and second periods to own a 23-15 lead at halftime. The Lady Bucs continued the scoring dominance in the second half, as they outscored the Lady Spartans 7-5 and 15-4 respectively in the third and fourth periods to ease to the 21-point win.

Wills lit up the backboards again with a magnificent 21-point performance to lead the team in scoring. She was followed by Reese with nine points, Pickard with seven points, Sutton with six points and Bradshaw with two points.

Wills went eight-for-12 in the free throw department. The team, as a whole, finished 12-of-22 at the line.

On Jan. 18, the Lady Bucs soundly whipped the Lady Crusaders of Curtis Baptist by a 59-26 margin for their 14th win of the year. Briarwood scored in double figures in the first three periods.

To open the game up in the first period, the Lady Bucs outscored Curtis 17-7. In the second period, the scoring barrage continued for Briarwood, as the team outscored Curtis 15-5 to lead 32-12 at halftime. The Lady Bucs exploded for 20 points in the third period, as the defense only allowed the Lady Crusaders one point.

Wills was the leading scorer for Briarwood with 17 points. She was followed by Reese with 15 points, Pickrell with nine points, Pickard with eight points, Bradshaw with six points and Lynam and Gerlach with two points each.

In the free throw department, Wills went seven-for-eight, Reese went three-for-four and Pickrell went three-for-six.

The squad's 15th victory of the year was recorded in the scorebook on Jan. 21 with a 60-43 win over the Lady Gators of Gatewood Academy at the Clinton H. Grant Fieldhouse. The Lady Bucs outscored the Lady Gators in each quarter in this event.

Briarwood bucketed five baskets in the first period to lead 10-4 at the buzzer. The squad then outscored Gatewood 6-4, 20-15 and 24-20 respectively in the final three periods to post the 17-point win.

Pickard was the leading scorer for Briarwood with 18 points. She was followed by Wills with 14 points, Bradshaw with 11 points, Reese with nine points, Sutton with six points and Ansley with two points.

Wills went six-for-10 in the free throw department. She was followed by Pickard two-for-two, Reese two-for-five and Bradshaw one-for-one.
