Briarwood boys improve in region standings, girls struggle in games

The Briarwood Runnin' Bucs continued to climb in the GISA Region 1AA standings last week with a 49-41 win over Brentwood School, but the Lady Bucs are having their troubles.

Currently, with a 4-3 region record, the Bucs are tied for third place in the standings with Gatewood School of Eatonton. Piedmont Academy is leading the region with a 7-1 record. Brentwood School of Sandersville and Westminster Christian Academy of Watkinsville are tied for second with a record of 5-3.

The boys came from 12 points down at the half to beat Brentwood 49-41 in Sandersville.

The Bucs' win was their second region win over Brentwood. Joseph Batrous scored 16 points for the Bucs followed by Hughlon Mays with 13 points. Ten of Batrous' 16 points came from the free throw line. Batrous has hit 20-of-21 free throws in the Bucs' last three games.

The Lady Bucs are continuing to struggle in region play. Their 39-51 loss to Brentwood was their sixth in region play. The Lady Bucs' sole region win was over Westminster Christian of Watkinsville.

"We are improving, and that's the most important thing," Coach Clayton Parrish said. "I told the girls that we want to be playing our best basketball by the time the region tournament (Feb. 13-16) gets here."

The Lady Bucs never recovered from a slow start against Brentwood, and ended up with a loss. Junior Whitney Carani had 22 points for the Lady Bucs, followed by junior Cassie Whitaker with 13 points.

The Briarwood teams traveled to Bellville Saturday to face long-time rival and AAA Pinewood Christian School. The Bucs lost a heart-breaking 36-38 decision to the Patriots in the closing seconds of the game. The Lady Bucs, facing AAA's only undefeated team, didn't fare well, falling 12-50 to the Lady Patriots.

The Briarwood teams will be playing all region games in action during the coming week. Briarwood will play host to Gatewood this Saturday, beginning with the girls B team at noon, the boys B team at 1 p.m., the Lady Bucs at 2:30 p.m., and the Bucs at 4 p.m. On Tuesday, Feb. 6, Briarwood will play host to Westminster Christian Academy. The boys B team will play at 4:30 p.m., followed by the Lady Bucs at 6 p.m., and the Bucs at 7:30 p.m.
