Tree dedicated to AmeriCorps volunteers at Dearing Elementary School

On Monday afternoon, a magnolia tree was dedicated to all the AmeriCorps volunteers who have served at Dearing Elementary since the reading tutorial program began there in 1999.

Students and officials listen to Dearing Principal Laura Hughes during Monday's ceremony.

Current AmeriCorps members planted the tree near the school's driveway and placed a sign in front of it explaining its dedication. Administrators, students, AmeriCorps members and McDuffie County Partners for Success staff gathered at the ceremony.

"We feel thankful that Dearing Elementary School has allowed us to be part of their school for the past seven years, and we wanted to present this tree for our appreciation," said current AmeriCorps Member Dawn Thornton.

DES Principal Laura Hughes thanked the volunteers for their service of helping to tutor students in reading over the years.

"We love having you here, and we love our AmeriCorps," she said.
