Thursday night, the Thomson-McDuffie County Chamber of Commerce used the Darrell Johnson award to honor the dentist and community servant's life and legacy.
"He loved this place," said Thomson Mayor Bob Knox Jr. "He loved its people. He joined with others to make this a better place.
He described Dr. Neal's grace and dignity in the dental profession, his faith and dedication to Thomson First United Methodist Church and his love of his family.
"In today's world of people who are takers, he was a giver," Mr. Knox said as he presented the award to Dr. Neal's children: Tom Neal, Jr., Nan Tam and Linton Neal.
Dr. Tom Neal, Jr., said his family was touched by the award and his father was proud to serve his Lord and his community.
"Dad would have really loved the honor of this award and the people here this evening," he said.
