Thirty-nine years ago, just out of Georgia Southern, Charles Johnson came to Thomson to teach at Laura Jones School. It would only be nine months, the Waycross native told himself.

Instead, he met a Thomson girl, raised a family and built a successful clothing manufacturer with clients including Disney and the New York Fire Department.
"I'm proud to say ... we have put $30 million in payroll back into this community," he said.
The award came as a shock to Mr. Johnson, who was joined at the banquet by his wife, Bonnie, and sons, Tommy and Walt.
"This award is not about Charles Johnson," he said. "This is about all the people in this room and what makes this community all that it is."
