The seventh grader at Thomson Middle School said she was nervous, "But I knew how to spell it."
Brianna Hart, an eighth grader at TMS, came in second in the Monday morning competition.
Students participating in the spelling bee have been studying a list of 3,900 words to prepare for the contest, said TMS Assistant Principal Pam Rhea.
"You are to be congratulated for coming this far," said Lynne Entrekin, who served as announcer.
She praised the students who gathered for the contest Jan. 31, and told them the first group of words in the contest was taken from a 1927 state word list from Vermont.
Other students who were part of the spelling bee were: Mausmi Patel, Jared Williams, Jasmine Shorty, Ty Forman, Karlee Brinkley, Brittany Reid, Rebecca Greene, Caleh Mincey, Taylor Clark, Caitlin Carpenter, Montrerius Daniels and Candace Rouse (not present).
