One Thomson High School senior may have missed National Signing Day by two days, but he received his athletic scholarship nonetheless. Clifton Belton inked a deal to run track for Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kan., on Friday.

Clifton will run sprinting events at JCCC, such as the 100 and 200 meters as well as the four by 100 meter relay. As a star on the THS track and football field, Clifton led the way with his blazing speed.
During his senior season on the gridiron, Clifton racked up 644 yards and four touchdowns at running back. And he did it even after missing much playing time with a shoulder injury.
Rossie Murray, Clifton's mother, said she had hoped her son would receive a football scholarship. But she said if his education would be covered by a track scholarship, she was just as happy.
Going off so far to school may be difficult on Clifton, but Ms. Murray said it would be good for him.
"He's been under mom's wing for 18 years," she said, adding that she will definitely find her way to Kansas for some track meets next year.
