The one that most students know as Mr. Wiggles, Evan Luke, has another side to him that not everyone knows.
A junior at Thomson High School, Evan often assumes the role of a solider in Civil War re-enactments. During re-enactments, many men and women from across the nation will get together and dress as the Confederate and Union soldiers and act out certain battles of the Civil War.
Evan Luke has been a Civil War re-enactor for 10 years.
Evan has been an active solider in re-enactments for about 10 years now, often portraying a drummer and a drill instructor, which is better known as 2nd Sergeant. Evan's entire family is involved with re-enactments, and he got his start tagging along with his dad.
"I started tagging along with my dad who also participates in the re-enactments. I love history, and it's a really unique hobby," Evan said. "I've been going to re-enactments for about 10 years."
Casey Luke, a freshman here at Thomson High, and Evan's little sister, is also involved with the re-enactments.
"It teaches me a lot about history," she said.
While Evan is off fighting in the war, Casey washes dishes, cooks on an open fire, and keeps camp clean.
"It has always been a family thing with us," Casey said.
Both Evan and Casey have traveled to a lot of places for the re-enactments including Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi.
Evan plans to participate in the re-enactments for as long as he can. The next re-enactment he will participate in will be held Feb. 20-22 in Aiken, SC. For more information on Civil War re-enactments go to www.geocities.com/fifthgeorgia.
