Pageant added to 2006 Dearing Mayfest lineup

Plans for the second annual Dearing Mayfest are rolling along as new changes are being made to make this year's event even better. Last year's festival brought more than 2,000 people to Dearing and raised more than $10,000 for restoration of the Dearing gym; and organizers hope to see the same success this year.

Judy Hobbs said the 2006 parade will be better with the addition of floats.

Another addition will be a crowned Miss Mayfest smiling and waving to the crowd. Miss Mayfest will be chosen in a pageant held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, at Dearing Elementary School.

The pageant will have four categories - Miss Mayfest for ages 13-19, Junior Miss Mayfest for ages 7-12, Little Miss Mayfest for ages 4-6, and Little Master Mayfest for ages 4-6. Applications can be picked up at Dearing Elementary, Thomson High and Thomson Middle Schools, Dearing City Hall, Kelley Business Printers, Axon's Mini Mart, Briarwood Academy, Dearing Cafe and any local day care. The pageant entry fee is $20 and the deadline to enter is February 25. The winner of each category will be in the parade.

"We were trying to think of something different, so it won't be the same thing. Each year we hope to add something new," said Liz Humphrey, pageant organizer.

In addition to the parade, the entire family can enjoy browsing and shopping through approximately 100 arts and crafts vendors, live entertainment, activities and rides, a car show and a hamburger cook off at the festival on Saturday, May 6.

Another change will be the sale of a Dearing calendar to replace last year's cookbook sale. The 18-month calendar features photos of scenes in Dearing.

Another quilt will be raffled. All proceeds will benefit the gym restoration.

Organizers are still looking for volunteers to help in the success of the Mayfest.

Those interested can attend the planning meetings held at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in Dearing City Hall.
