Lady Bucs take region title, both teams head to playoffs

The post-season for the Briarwood Academy basketball teams continues this week, as the Buccaneers and Lady Bucs participate in the first round of the GISA Class AA State Basketball Tournament.

Coach Clayton Parrish's Lady Bucs, the No. 2 ranked team in the state with a perfect 23-0 record, captured the Region 1-AA Championship last weekend by defeating the Brentwood Academy Lady Eagles 60-45 in a come-from-behind win.

On Wednesday, Feb. 16, the Lady Bucs played Frederica Academy from the St. Simons area in the first round of the state playoffs held at Brentwood Academy in Sandersville. Check for results of the Briarwood-Fredrica game.

If the Lady Bucs get by Frederica, they will face the winner of the Tift Area-Heritage contest on Friday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. at Middle Georgia College in Cochran. The winner of this playoff game will advance to state semi-finals next week at Georgia College in Milledgeville.

Coach Greg Keck's Runnin' Bucs finished the region tournament as the No. 4 seed, and they will face the undefeated Pinewood Patriots this Thursday night, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. at Brentwood Academy. If the Bucs upset the undefeated Patriots, they will then play the winner of the Calvary Christian-Southwest Georgia game on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 8:30 p.m. at Middle Georgia College.
