Basketball season ends for Bucs, continues in playoffs for Lady Bucs

The Briarwood Lady Bucs came on strong at the end of their season, capturing second place in the Region 1AA tournament last week and earning a second place seed in the first round of AA state playoffs, which pitted them against Frederica Academy of St. Simons Island on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Middle Georgia College in Cochran.

"You lose; you're done," Coach Clayton Parrish says of all games from now until the AA girls finals on Saturday, March 1, at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville.

The Lady Bucs must win their game with Frederica in order to advance. Both teams played in extremely strong regions, according to Coach Parrish.

The Lady Bucs, the number two team in Region 1AA, were defeated by Gatewood School, the number two ranked AA team in the state, in the 1AA region playoffs, while Frederica, the number three team in Region 3AA, played in the region with Trinity Christian of Dublin, the number one ranked AA team in the state. In the Region 2 playoffs, Frederica was defeated by Bullock Academy. Bulloch was defeated for the region title by Trinity.

The Lady Bucs were scheduled to face Frederica at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. At 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Middle Georgia College, the winner of that game will face the winner of the Randolph Southern School of Shellman/ Furtah Preparatory School of Acworth game to determine which team will advance to the semi-finals of the girls GISA AA tournament next Friday, February 29, at Georgia College and State University.

The Lady Bucs defeated Westminster Christian of Watkinsville in the first round of play and then upset number two seed Brentwood School of Sandersville in the second round of play to reach the finals in the Region 1AA tournament held last week at Monroe Academy in Forsyth, but couldn't overcome Gatewood School of Eatonton last Friday night in the region title game and fell 42-33 to the Lady Gators.

It was the first time in three years that the Lady Bucs reached the finals in the region tournament. After a slow start to the season, the Lady Bucs turned their year around, winning nine of their final 11 games. Both losses were to Gatewood.

Meanwhile, the Briarwood Runnin' Bucs disappointing season came to end last week when a 41-37 final seconds loss to Gatewood School of Eatonton knocked the Bucs out of the playoffs. The loss came in the second round of the GISA Region 1AA playoffs Wednesday at Monroe Academy in Forsyth.

"It would have been real easy for them to quit," Coach Christian Tiller said of the 2008 Runnin' Bucs, who ended the season 8-18 overall. "They could have folded up their tents after we lost eight in a row, but they never quit and ended the season on a four-game winning streak."

The Bucs dominated Young Americans Christian Academy 63-39 in the first round of the region playoffs on Monday.

"It was really the most complete game we've had all year, from beginning to end, and it was a good sign for us to play well at the end of the season," Coach Tiller said.
