Man killed in fiery crash identified as Dearing resident

THOMSON, Ga. - A man killed in a fiery, single-car crash on Fort Creek Road on Tuesday morning in McDuffie County has been positively identified as a Dearing resident, according to authorities.

McDuffie County Coroner Rhusha Mack said the victim was 25-year-old Zi-Komo Winslow Cummings, who resided at 5858 Goett Road.

An autopsy performed at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Augusta on Wednesday revealed that Mr. Cummings died from multiple blunt force trauma, Coroner Mack said.

Authorities were able to determine his identity based on evidence collected at the scene and a family member who provided information as well. At the scene, Coroner Mack mentioned that it could take up to several days to determine the man's identity and where he was from since his body was burned beyond recognition.

The wreck happened about 5 a.m. Tuesday on Fort Creek Road near Huff's Bridge Road.

Cpl. Chris Wright of the Georgia State Patrol post in Thomson said he believes the driver may have fallen asleep, since there were no skid marks found at the scene.

"He was traveling at a high rate of speed and for some reason hit a tree afterwards causing the car to catch fire," Cpl. Wright said.

When firefighters/first responders with the McDuffie County Fire/Rescue Services arrived shortly before 5:30 a.m. they discovered the Mazda car totally engulfed by flames. The body of Mr. Cummings was found in the burned debris on the passenger side.
