The Boys & Girls Clubs of Augusta's 2006 Steak & Burger Dinner is set for Tuesday, March 28, 6:30 p.m. at the Augusta State University Athletic Center. Keynote speaker will be Larry Munson, legendary radio voice of Georgia football.
The 19th Annual Steak & Burger Dinner is an opportunity to meet some of the over 2,000 at-risk youth served by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Augusta. Each table at the dinner will have six adults (who eat the burgers) and two Club members (who eat the steaks, although trading is permitted).
Mr. Munson is now in his fifth decade as the radio voice of Georgia football. His delivery, along with an unabashed partisanship for the Bulldogs, has endeared him to generations of UGA fans.
A World War II vet, Mr. Munson got interested in radio when he heard an ad about the shortage of radio personnel in the United States. With his $200 military discharge check Mr. Munson enrolled in radio school in Devil's Lake, N.D., where he graduated in a class of 20 students.
In 1966, while on assignment in Florida for the Atlanta Braves Spring practice, Mr. Munson accepted a job from the University of Georgia to replace longtime radio announcer Ed Thilenius. Since then, the Minnesota native has made a connection with the Bulldog Nation. His often imitated, never duplicated style has earned him the title of "The 12th Man" in Georgia football.
Annual awards for the Boys & Girls Club of Augusta members will also be presented at the Steak & Burger Dinner, including the 2006 "Youth of the Year" award. Sponsorship levels for the event range from $1,000 to $10,000 and individual tickets are $100. For further information, please call the Boys & Girls Clubs of Augusta at 706-312-2200. Money raised from the event also benefits the Thomson-McDuffie County Boys & Girls Club.
