McDuffie County Elementary Schools will hold a Kindergarten Round-Up March 13-17 at Thomson, Maxwell and Dearing Elementary Schools. Parents are requested to visit the school assigned to their zone between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to complete a registration packet.
This registration is required of all students entering kindergarten, even if the student has already tested at their pre-K center.
According to McDuffie County Board of Education information, parents will need to supply two proofs of residency, which is a copy of their rental/lease agreement or property tax statement, and a copy of a gas, electric or water bill. No cable or phone bills will be accepted as proof of residency. Other forms needed are the child's social security card, birth certificate, and their GA Form 3231 certificate of immunization.
Mark Petersen, McDuffie County School Superintendent, said the Round-Up is intended to alleviate last-minute changes during the first week of school due to unexpected enrollees. In 2005, kindergarten enrollment overflowed the first day of school, requiring the school board to hire additional teachers and paraprofessionals, and acquire classroom space, furniture and curriculum.
"I can't afford to add them after the fact. The budget has already been approved, and the good teachers are gone. I need to be able to do that on the front end," Dr. Petersen said in an earlier interview.
