McDuffie County volunteer firefighter involved in dump truck, SUV crash

A McDuffie County volunteer firefighter was involved in a dump truck, Jeep Cherokee collision near Appling, just after 1 p.m., confirms a local fire official.

McDuffie County Fire/Rescue Services Chief Bruce Tanner said Tom McFarland, who was driving a dump truck near the entrance of the Columbia County Detention Center on Columbia Road, received minor injuries.

Mr. McFarland, former fire chief of the North Columbia Fire/Rescue Services near Appling, has worked as a volunteer with the McDuffie County Fire/Rescue Services for the past year, Chief Tanner told The McDuffie Mirror. He serves as volunteer at the Carolyn Lake Station No. 6 in McDuffie County.

The female driver of the SUV, whose name still hasn't been released, apparently received serious injuries since she was flown from the scene by helicopter to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta, according to The Augusta Chronicle.

Firefighter/first responders with the Martinez-Columbia County Fire/Rescue Services and other emergency personnel worked for more than an hour to free the woman from her vehicle. The SUV landed in a ditch and was partially wedged underneath the dump truck.

The wreck remains under investigation by the Columbia County Sheriff's Department.
