Thomson Elementary School will have a new principal when the 2006-2007 school year starts.
But the face will be a familiar one.
Anita Cummings, who currently serves as Washington-Wilkes Middle School's Assistant Principal, was approved by the McDuffie County Board of Education last Thursday. She replaces Beth Newton, who is moving to the central office as the Federal Programs Director.
"There's no place like home," Mrs. Cummings said Tuesday. "I'm clicking my heels together."
Mrs. Cummings spent 19 years in the McDuffie County school system - all of them at the middle school. She was named the 2002 McDuffie Teacher of the Year and the 2003 McDuffie County STAR Teacher.
Mrs. Cummings still lives in McDuffie County and is looking forward to a shorter drive to work.
"I've enjoyed here, but I'm glad to be coming back home," she said.
In her new role, Dr. Newton will oversee programs like Title I in the curriculum department.
