Authority cracks down on rentals

After two recent teen parties got out of hand, the Thomson-McDuffie Recreation Authority has decided to no longer allow use of county facilities for such gatherings unless certain conditions are met.

Two different disturbances at the Sweetwater Activity Center on Wire Road involving guns and the injury of a pedestrian by a motorist speeding away from gun fire led to the authority's decision. These incidents occurred while security officers were present, a recreation spokesman said.

Director Bob Howard said his office will use their best judgment on what to allow when it comes to parties, but for certain there will be no more "night club" type events. He said certain activities will now require the presence of a uniformed law enforcement officer, and those renting the building will not be allowed to charge admission.
