Columnist proud of board of education

I attended the March meeting of the McDuffie County School Board. As a teacher, parent and taxpayer, I was interested in several issues. Personally, I do not have a dog in any of the current fights, but I might the next time.

Never have I been prouder of the school board in my 13 years here. By not bringing certain issues to a vote, they did "step up" and sent a clear message.

The message was obvious. Why change the speed limit to 45 when everyone is already driving 70? Why create new rules and policies when the current ones are not being enforced? Would the changes be enforced or simply left to the parents that willingly follow them while others do as they please?

There are other workable solutions besides growing a conflict that exists in the minds of only a few. I see the board exercising the patience to give the new administration a chance without making knee-jerk decisions. This approach will help us all in the long run.

The board put aside any individual differences and used common sense by "not voting" on some potentially divisive issues. It surely was better than a 4-3 split decision. I applaud them.
