McDuffie STAR student competes in region event

The STARs were shining in the banquet hall of First Baptist Church Thursday, March 23. The 2006 STAR Student Awards Banquet honored STAR students, teachers and sponsors from surrounding counties.

McDuffie County STAR student Kathy Robinson addressed the audience.

The Region 7 STAR Student and Teacher, announced at the end of the banquet, was Columbia County's Kaitlyn Frazier and her calculus teacher, Timothy Shafer. Kaitlyn will represent the region at the state banquet in Atlanta on April 26.

Kaitlyn, a senior at Augusta Preparatory Day School, scored 2360 points out of a possible 2400, earning her the region title over STAR students of 12 other counties: Burke, Glascock, Hancock, Jefferson, Jenkins, Johnson, Lincoln, McDuffie, Richmond, Warren, Washington and Wilkes.

During the banquet, each student and teacher gave a short speech honoring each other. Kathy Robinson, STAR student for McDuffie County, gave a quote which she said describes her STAR teacher, Kelly Flanders. Mrs. Flanders teaches Advanced Placement British Literature and Composition at Thomson High.

"Mahatma Gandhi describes Mrs. Flanders when he said 'Live as if you will die tomorrow, learn as if you will live forever,'" Kathy said.

The annual banquet is sponsored by Georgia Power.

"It's a great joy for me to hear all these STARs," said Ron Shipman, area manager for Georgia Power. "An educated workforce is what everybody is looking for."
