Track teams kick off season

Both the girls' and boys' track teams are off to a good start.

The oys' coaches are Rodney Garvin and Willie Williams and the girls' coaches are Jennie Wiles and Alvin Wright with the assistance of Neil Osbon.

Saturday, March 12, the Bulldogs competed against about eight other teams at one of Greenbrier's annual invitational meets. Because this was only the second track meet of the year for both teams, they weren't as prepared as they wanted to be.

Coach Wright said, "The girls did well; they will be okay".

A participant of the meet, Brenton Widener said, "I think every one gave it their all." Because the meet contained a number of teams, only two people/teams could participate per event.

Unlike most track meets, this meet eliminated many events including the 100 meter and 4x400 relay races and instead added medley relays. Like most invitationals, both preliminaries and finals were held.

Those who made it to the finals and their events from both teams include: High Jump: Rodney Roberts -- second; Long Jump: Shakina Grant -- sixth, Anthony Erwin -- third and Tykia Key -- fourth; Triple Jump: Rodney Roberts -- third and Shannon Williams -- fourth; Discus Throw: Jason Jones -- third, Nikita Taylor -- fifth and Kim Johnson -- fourth; Shot Put: Kim Johnson -- first; 4x100 relay team of Destiny Barbour, Renae Barbour, Tykia Key and Tiffany Dagget -- fourth; 110 hurdles: Dagget -- first; Nikosha Hudson -- second and Roberts -- fourth; 200 meter: Anthony Erwin -- sixth; 300 meter hurdles: Dagget -- first, Roberts -- first and Hudson -- fourth. While Ashley Simmons and Nathaniel Jones both finished first in their heat of the 400 meter race, Mario Windley came in third and Tangie Burnett -- fourth.
