Win puts fate in Briarwood's hands

The Briarwood Bucs 9-5 win Monday over Brentwood School not only provided the team with the opportunity to finish as high as second place in region standings; it also placed them in a position to determine their own fate in the Region 1AA standings.

"Now, we control our own destiny," Coach Bo Fleming said after the win, which put the Bucs' in a tie for third place in the region standings with Piedmont Academy. The Bucs will travel to Monticello this Thursday for a repeat game with Piedmont at 4 p.m. Piedmont defeated a depleted Bucs' team 13-0 in their first meeting.

With only four region games left for the Bucs before the playoffs begin, Windsor is the top team in Region 1AA with an 8-0 record, followed by Gatewood in second place at 5-4, and Westminster Christian in third place at 5-5.

The Bucs came back after spring break to play one of their best games of the season in their 9-5 victory over Brentwood on Monday.

"It was a huge win for our team," Coach Fleming said. "Hopefully, we'll build on the momentum going into the playoffs."

Senior pitcher Joseph Batrous was credited with the win after pitching the final two innings of play. Senior Seth Williford gave up only three hits pitching the first five innings of the game.

The Bucs will play host to region opponent Monroe Academy of Forsyth at 1 p.m. this Saturday at Briarwood. They will play host to second place Westminster Christian at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 16, and then travel to Eatonton on Tuesday for the final regular season region game against Gatewood at 4:30 p.m.
