Area cattlemen will not want to miss the upcoming Field Day to be held at Sweetwater Plantation Angus Farm near Thomson. The event is planned for Saturday, April 23, beginning at 10 a.m.
For several months now, Warren County Agent Tammy Cheely and myself, in collaboration with Little River Cattlemen's Association, have been working with Sweetwater Managers John and Denise Gillis to plan one of the best field days ever.
Thanks to the cooperation of Sweetwater's owner, Frank Adkins, we have been able to line up demonstrations of how ultrasound devices are being used to make management decisions by many of today's prominent cattlemen.
We are so excited about being able to share this with each of you. Ultrasound can be used to determine fat thickness - on a live animal! Stages of pregnancy can be monitored. You can even tell the sex of a calf before it is born.
Now I know many of you are thinking, "I won't ever be able to afford that type of technology."
Maybe you won't be using ultrasound anytime soon but we can all learn from those who are doing it and there are certainly ways to improve our own situation with this knowledge.
We have several other things planned besides the ultrasound demonstrations.
You may want to bring a camera to take pictures of the working facilities.
Everyone always wants to know how to work cattle easier and with less help. Any of you who are planning to buy cattle or a bull in the near future, may want to talk to John Gillis about their upcoming sale on May 7. You might even look at some of the sale prospects while you are there.
Important - In order for us to adequately prepare for this event, please call my office at 595-1815 by Wednesday, April 20, if you plan to attend.
