Briarwood heading to region playoffs

Despite entering the GISA Region 1AA playoffs with a record equivalent to that of the number one seed, the Briarwood Diamond Buccaneers lost the number one seed and the right to host the region tournament.

The Bucs, who finished their regular season Monday with a 5-1 win over Westminster School of Augusta, will compete in their first region playoff game at noon this Saturday, April 17, at Westminster Christian School in Watkinsville.

The consolation game will be played at 2 p.m. The Region 1-AA championship game will be played at 4 p.m.

The number two seeded Bucs will face the winner of the number six seeded Thomas Jefferson Academy Jaguars and the number three seeded Brentwood School Eagles game in the Bucs' first playoff at noon.

Number one seeded Westminster will face the winner of the number four seeded John Hancock Rebels vs. the number five seeded Nathanael Green Academy Patriots game at 10 a.m. on Saturday, also at Westminster's field.

The Buccaneers, whose 8-2 record matches that of number one seed Westminster Christian of Watkinsville, lost 3-2 to Westminster in their only match up of the season in Watkinsville.

According to new region playoff rules, when teams have the same number of points, the ranking is based on head to head competition. Westminster will host the tourney by virtue of their 3-2 win over the Bucs in Watkinsville in the two teams' only meeting.
