It's almost time to start planting the seeds of a winning watermelon.
Free Tom Watson watermelon seeds are available at the Watson-Brown Foundation office at 310 Tom Watson Way, from Monday through Friday, 8 a.m-5 p.m., and at McDuffie Feed & Seed in Thomson.
Melons will be judged at the Tom Watson Watermelon Festival on Saturday, Aug. 12, held on the grounds of Hickory Hill. Competition melons must be received at the festival between 8 a.m.-10 a.m. Participants must register for the competition.
Festival organizers recommend starting seed indoors, and then planting them outside after May 1.
Prizes are as follows: First Place Largest Tom Watson melon $300; Second Place Largest Tom Watson melon $200; Third Place Largest Tom Watson melon $100; Child's Prize Largest Tom Watson melon $75. Call 706-595-8886 or 706-595-7777 for more information.
