Thomson Coach John Barnett admittedly was a little nervous about how his team might do entering Monday's Region 3-AAA Golf Tournament at Waynesboro Country Club in Waynesboro.
Before the day ended, though, his team didn't disappoint themselves or their coach, as they captured the championship.
"I am very proud of the girls' efforts this season, since this was our goal from the beginning," said Coach Barnett. "They have worked very hard to improve their games and battled through some bad shots and difficult situations. They never lost their composure."
The Lady Bulldogs, behind the impressive performance of junior golfer Rebecca "Becca" Goldman, who shot an 86 and was named low medalist, defeated the Lady Bears of Burke County High School by three strokes to win the title. Thomson posted a team score of 180, while Burke County finished with a 183 score.
The 180 score by the Lady Bulldogs is 22 strokes better than the winning score of a year ago in the region tournament, according to Coach Barnett.
Thomson's Sara Blackmon-Hughes shot a 94, while her sister, Grace Blackmon-Hughes, a freshman, also participated in the tourney.
The Lady Bulldogs will now spend the next several days sharpening their skills, as they prepare to play in the Class AAA State Golf Tournament. The tournament will be played on Monday, May 5 at Atlanta Trophy Club in Alpharetta.
