Briarwood's Keen wins state 400-meter title

Briarwood Academy eighth grader Lizzie Keen captured the school's only state championship title at the GISA AA state track meet last weekend at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.

Briarwood Academy eighth grader Erin Wester, the daughter of Dr. Darrell and Pam Wester of Thomson, runs her leg of the 4x100 meter relay at the GISA AA state track meet last weekend at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.

Keen won the 400-meter dash for the Lady Bucs with a time of 63.45 seconds, her best of the year.

The Lady Bucs placed fifth overall in the state meet, capturing one first place, three third places, three fourth places, two fifth places and three sixth places

All 10 of the Lady Bucs who qualified for the state meet in running events in the Region 1AA meet qualified for state competition in the qualification trials held Friday morning. As qualification trials are not held for the field events, all region qualifiers participated in the field events.

Senior Beth Gerlach placed third in the shot put with a throw of 33'5"; eighth grader Erin Wester placed third in the high jump with a jump of 4'10"; and eighth grader Anna Goolsby placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.

Senior Katie Reese took fourth in the discus with a throw of 85'11" while Gerlach took her second medal with a fourth at pole vault, going out at 7'6". Sophomore Cassie Pickrell took fourth place in the 100-meter hurdles.

Dave Joesbury was the highest placing Buc. Joesbury, a sophomore, took fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 38'9".

Sophomore Whitney Carani took fifth place in the 300-meter hurdles. Goolsby placed fifth in the 400-meter run.

Junior Olivia Lyons took 6th in the high jump while sophomore Hughlon Mays took sixth in the 200-meter dash.

Both of the Lady Bucs' number one relay teams took sixth place. The 4x100 meter relay team of Gerlach, Keen, Melisa Newsome and Pickrell took sixth place, as did the 4x400 meter relay team of Newsome, Keen, Goolsby and Carani.

Senior Melisa Newsome took seventh place in the 100-meter hurdles. Eighth grader Matthew McElveen, who was running injured, took eighth in the 400-meter run for the Bucs.

The Lady Bucs No. 2 4x100 meter relay team of Reese, Carani, Wester and Goolsby took eighth place.
