Mrs. Dorothy Leona Ogletree Jones

UNION POINT, Ga. - Mrs. Dorothy Leona Ogletree Jones, 91, of the Robinson Community, passed away at her home early Tuesday morning, May 1, 2007, surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Jones was born in Hancock County on December 30, 1915, and was the daughter of John Thomas and Lula Nunn Ogletree. She grew up in the Powelton Community, graduating from grade school there and later was a 1933 graduate of Taliaferro High School. Mrs. Jones met and married Wiley Cranston Jones, December 2, 1934. They stayed in Powelton, where she became a home maker and a mother. In 1944, during World War II, Mr. Jones was serving in the armed forces, and Leona and the children where living in Margaret's Grove. In 1951, the family came to reside in the Robinson Community, and later, after raising her children, Mrs. Jones started a working career. She was a seamstress for the Garland Knitting Mill in Warrenton for seven years, and, from 1968 to 1977, she was a nurse's aide at the Greene Point Nursing Home. During all these busy times, Mrs. Jones became an accomplished knitter and quilter. She was also an avid flower gardener. Mrs. Jones loved Jesus. She was a member of the Robinson Baptist Church since 1951 and became involved with missionary work there as Director of the Royal Ambassadors, Global Samaritans and the Women's Missionary Union. In her 70's, she went to New York and later taught Bible school to American Indian children in Nevada on mission trips. Mrs. Jones loved her family and was a true follower of Christ.

Mrs. Jones is survived by her daughters, Barbara Merlene J. Browning of Union Point, Nell J. Smith of Bowden, and Sandra J. Holdeman of Orlando; her sons, Franklin T. Jones of Thomson and Harvey Jones of Sandy Springs; grandchildren, Robert Browning, Jr., Walter Cranston Browning, Ruby Lynn Ashley, Roger Jones, Meredith Paige Jones, Ginger Lyn Nixon, Rev. Derek Mallory Smith, Amanda Lee Scott, Wiley Clay Jones, Sharmein Smith, and Jamie Smith, plus 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great grand children. Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Wiley Cranston Jones, who passed in 1999 and her son, Wiley Jones, who passed in 2004.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2007, at the Robinson Baptist Church with Pastor Skip Padgett and Rev. Derek Smith presiding. Interment followed in the Powelton Community Cemetery. Pallbearers were Roger Jones, Robert Browning, Jr., Jamie Smith, Clay Jones, Walter Cranston, Mark Yearwood and Lee Yearwood.
