Peacock Hill to expand
McDuffie County's Small Business of the Year will soon be getting bigger. Peacock Hill will be adding a new section onto the store in the back of the building, pending approval by the county commission at its May 18 meeting.
Pine Grove to add on
Pine Grove Baptist Church may be adding a new and improved fellowship hall thanks to a recommendation to approve the project from the McDuffie County Planning Commission.
The church located at the corner of Washington Road and Lincolnton Highway has outgrown its current facility, according to Planning Director Fred Guerrant.
Gym work may start soon
County commissioners got some good news last week when they learned of a state exemption that will allow the county to begin renovating the Dearing gym at any time -- even in the middle of bat-mating season.
Commissioners had thought that the elimination of a pesky bat problem in the gym would need to wait until August, but this exemption means that work can start immediately.
At last week's board meeting commissioners approved a bid of approximately $5,000 to eliminate the bats and their droppings, which officials have warned can cause a serious but rare infection in humans.
Officials hope that work can begin before the end of the month.
County to help with grant application
McDuffie County officials agreed last week to assist in a grant application being submitted by the McDuffie Regional Medical Center aimed at funding a professional office park to be built directly behind MRMC.
County Road Department Director Chris Pelly agreed to help with slag timber clean-up and initial road clearing for the development.
Hospital officials will be able to note as such on their $600,000 grant proposal -- due later this month -- which they hope will strengthen their application.
