McDuffie library plans summer of reading fun

The Thomson McDuffie County library is offering a comprehensive summer vacation reading program that includes a reading club and an array of activities for children of all ages.

Dubbed FUN-tastic Reading 2005, the circus-themed program kicks off May 21 at the library with a day of exciting activities, said Suzan Harris, library and child services coordinator. Last year about 2,800 children participated in the summer program, Ms. Harris said, and she expects even more involvement this year.

Children can register for the reading club and participate in games and activities during the kickoff. A lunch of hot dogs, side items and Coca-Cola, donated by businesses, is scheduled from 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Ben & Keeter's Puppets will entertain children starting at 1 p.m., Ms. Harris said.

The summer reading program is designed to be fun and to help children maintain and polish the skills they acquired during the school year.

The Reading Club, open to children of all ages, will encourage a love of books by making reading a leisurely, fun activity, Ms. Harris said. Each week reading club members who visit the library will receive a prize, and a random drawing will be held each week for additional prizes. Reading Club Folders will help students follow their progress, and members will receive certificates for their efforts.

As part of the summer program, several workshops are scheduled that require registration:

  • Clowning Around Tuesday, June 7 at 1 p.m.
