Many senior citizens have spent the better part of their lives helping others, and Leadership McDuffie has come up with a way to help pay back the favor.
A group effort is underway to provide rocking chairs for the Senior Citizens Center, said Ted Duzenski, head of operations at the Thomson campus of Augusta Tech and a member of Leadership McDuffie.
There is already a commitment for two of the solid oak chairs, and Leadership McDuffie group members hope the community will step up and sponsor some chairs for the seniors. Each chair has a cost of $85 and has a small plaque suitable for engraving. The chairs can be given in memory or in honor of someone, or smaller donations will be accepted that will be pooled and will go toward purchasing chairs from the community at large.
"We would like to see the community get involved in this effort," Mr. Duzenski said.
The group chose to focus on seniors for this project, and "This effort is to provide senior citizens a place to relax because that's what they like," said group member Margie Reese.
"Rocking is relaxing, and it's good for your health," said group member Karen Abron.
Also as part of the focus on seniors, the group will sponsor a dinner for nursing home employees on May 23.
Those interested in donating a chair in honor or memory of someone, or those who want to donate a portion of the cost of a chair, may contact Ms. Abron or Ms. Reese at 595-8941.
