Summer reading program kicks off Saturday at library

It's time to crawl to the ugly bug ball this weekend as the annual vacation reading club begins at the Thomson-McDuffie Library.

Festivities begin at 11 a.m., lunch is at 11:30 and a "catch the reading bug" magic show by Chad Crews will be at 1 p.m.

"(Chad Crews) is like what we ought to have for kick-off day, that's why we have him," said Suzan Harris, the Thomson-McDuffie County librarian and child services coordinator. "He sets the tone for the whole summer. He's so much fun."

Local children can catch the fun all summer with activities such as bug-themed craft workshops and magic, reptile and puppet shows taking place twice weekly until July 15.

When registered, children of all ages will receive a reading club folder to record how many books they read.

Certificates will be awarded when 10 books are read. Preschool children are given certificates for having the 10 books read to them. Books containing more than 100 pages count as two books.

The library is located at 338 Main Street in downtown Thomson. Call 706-595-1341 for more information.
