Sweetwater gym nears completion

After 13 years of waiting, and more than $2 million in construction costs, the Sweetwater Park gym is now a reality.

On Wednesday, Recreation Department Director Bob Howard gave his Board of Directors a sneak preview of the new facility.

"We are coming in on time and on budget," Mr. Howard said.

The gym boasts two basketball courts, abundant storage for athletic equipment, and will provide much-needed office space for the recreation department.

While the furniture is not yet in place, the gym will be fully operational by mid-June as scheduled.

"We had no major problems during construction," Mr. Howard remarked, and he noted that the scope of the change orders during the construction process was "minimal."

Although it was originally part of the 1993 master plan for the park, groundbreaking for the 23,000 square foot gymnasium did not occur until September of 2005.
