Sapp's camps celebrates 25 years

The 25th annual Robert Sapp Baseball Camp will begin at Sweetwater Park on June 6. Bob Howard, director of Thomson-McDuffie Recreation Department, said this is the sixth year they've hosted the Sapp Camp.

"It started off kind of small, but now it's getting kind of big. It's really growing, so that says good things about it," Mr. Howard said. The camp will be directed by Robert Sapp, former head coach at University of Georgia and Middle Georgia College.

"Thomson is one of our favorite places to come. The parents receive us so well, we get to eat with them, and get to know everybody," Mr. Sapp said. "We've definitely gone through a lot of players over there."

In addition to Mr. Sapp, the coaching staff during the camp will include Aaron Hall, JV coach at Thomson High School, Craig Chapman, PE teacher at Norris Elementary School, Mark Estes from Macon, and Kyle Langford from Hawkinsville. College players on the staff will include Rusty Harris from South Georgia College and Matthew Whitt from Mercer University.

The camp is open for boys ages 7-14. Campers will be grouped by age and skill-level. Each camper will receive instruction in fundamentals, afternoon competitions, instructional videos, camp T-shirt, and prizes.

Campers need to bring their glove, bat, cap, suitable clothes, and their own lunch. Powerade will be provided. Mr. Howard said the concession stand will be open for those who wish to purchase their lunch.

Camp sessions are from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., Monday June 6 through Friday June 10. Cost for the camp is $115 per player, with a discount given to teams registering five or more players.

Registration forms can be filled out at the Recreation Department office, or from the concession stand at Sweetwater Park. Campers may register on the first day of camp with a $10 late fee.
