Golf tournament benefi ts Warren County athletic programs

WARRENTON - Golfers from throughout the Central Savannah River Area gathered at The Club at White Rock, a local golf course, last Saturday for the First Annual Warren County High School Boosters Club to raise money for various athletic programs at the school.

"It was a huge success," said Bunny Hunter, who along with her husband, Craig, helped to organize the event. "We hope that we can start doing this every year to raise money for different things at the school."

A putting contest, sponsored By Warrenton Mayor Tony Mimbs and ACME/Milner Business Technologies of Augusta, saw Russell Farmer, of Thomson, crowned the champion.

Finishing runner-up in the putting contest was Randy Tucker, of Augusta, while Jose Granados captured third place.

The 18-hole gross golf tournament, meanwhile, was won By the team of Tommy Wangness, Jose Granados, Stewart Young and Aaron Cobb. The winning team shot an overall score of 51 and was sponsored By C & C Tire Services in Thomson.

The team finishing second place in gross competition consisted of Don Wren, Joey Kaney, Randy Johnson and Allen Foreman. The runner-up team, who shot a team score of 53, was sponsored By Habersham Bank of Warrenton.

Of the teams competing in gross play, one of them had just three players, but still managed to post an overall score of 66. That particular team consisted of Mayor Mimbs, David Newton and Marty Pinion.

The team winning the best net score of 45, meanwhile, consisted of Lindy Tudor, Russell Farmer, Todd Roswick and Sammy Sparkman.

Finishing second place in net scoring with a 48 score was the team of Craig Hunter, Charles Raley, Alan Moon and Mark Ackerman. The team was sponsored By Booger Farms of Warrenton.

Various prizes were awarded to everyone who participated in the golf tournament, Mrs. Hunter said. A complimentary lunch, consisting of grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, as well as cold drinks, also was served to the participants, as well as a host of students from Warren County High School who viewed much of the day-long tourney.

"I can't say enough about what all our sponsors did to make this tournament as successful as it was," Mrs. Hunter said. "I really can't thank them enough. Several of them provided a lot of really nice prizes."
