$235,000: Relay for Life still collecting money

It keeps growing and growing.

Relay for Life just got bigger as McDuffie County has passed $235,000 in donations to the annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

"I am so excited, because they just blew it out of the water," said Summer Garrison, community manager for the society.

McDuffie's goal of $220,000 was reached while walkers were still on the track during the Relay, making 2006 the first year for such an achievement.

"To increase by 15 (thousand dollars) is crazy, you don't see that a lot," Ms. Garrison said.

During the Relay on Friday, May 12, Ms. Garrison told Thomson Mayor and Relay Co-Chairman Bob Knox that she would dye her blonde hair purple if McDuffie County's donations reached $235,000.

"She's very apprehensive, needless to say, because as much as she wanted to make 235, she never thought it would happen. It's just that remarkable of a figure. That is just huge," said Relay Co-Chairman Peggy Willis.

Ms. Garrison said she is amazed with the teams of McDuffie County. She said she doesn't know where they get the ideas for their fundraisers and how they find time to do it while working full-time jobs.

"I'm just so proud of everyone, I feel like that's the least I can do is dying my hair purple," she said.

A celebration luncheon for team captains is tentatively scheduled for mid-July at the White Columns Inn, according to Ms. Willis.
