A plan to rehabilitate the old Thomson Company property got a $500,000 boost from the State of Georgia last week.
The Georgia Department of Community Affairs awarded Thomson and McDuffie County the Redevelopment Fund grant June 7, according to a DCA news release.
Thomson City Administrator Bob Flanders said he's excited about the possibilities of the building.
"We have the opportunity to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear," he said.
The grant money, coupled with local one-cent sales tax dollars, will help remove contaminated soils, clear out the property and rehabilitate the building for future use.
Mr. Flanders said work should begin by the end of the year.
