Locals participate in BRAG
Five local cyclists are among the nearly 1,500 people involved in this year's bicycle ride across Georgia.
Two are from Warrenton. Larry Rachels, a long time forest and land services employee, and his friend Dennis Neal, an Augusta chemical company employee, pedaled their way home at a rate of about 60 miles a day. The 423 mile scenic ride began Saturday, June 10 in Dalton and wound up in Augusta Saturday, June 17.
Rachels' son, Jeremy, said there were also several riders from McDuffie County taking part this year, too.
Fire Station Bid
McDuffie County Commissioners approved a bid Tuesday night to build the new Fire Station One on Harrison Road. The base bid, minus the alternate deduction, came in at $843,000 from Thomson-based Stewart-Corbitt, Inc.
With additional costs connected to the project such as contingency and architectural fees, the total cost would be around $995,000, some $145,000 over budget.
Fire Chief Bruce Tanner's proposal to make up the difference included not replacing a 16-year-old pumper truck until the next sales tax vote.
