Karl Green has added another course to his already full menu.
Mr. Green has been dietary director at McDuffie County Hospital for 10 years. He has operated his own catering business, "Standing Invitation," for five years. On Friday, June 17, Mr. Green opened a new restaurant, "Karl's Fish Shack."
"I've been in the restaurant business for 23 years," Mr. Green said. "I've done a heap of different types of cooking, both for restaurants and in competitions. I saw a need for a fish shack in Thomson, and a good location, and decided to open it."
Mr. Green has lived in Thomson for the past 10 years. He has dreamed of opening a bar and grill type restaurant in Thomson, but he didn't want to "abandon them here at the hospital. I love the hospital." The fish shack is "conducive to the hospital job," allowing him to do both.
"Soon to be famous" fried catfish, mullet, and brim are the main items served at the fish shack. Other selections on the menu include catfish po' boys, "buffaloed" gizzards, homemade slaw and fries, and sweet tea. To provide variety, a weekly special meal will be offered that's not on the regular menu. Meals range from $5.79-$8.99.
"I have three ladies who have been cooking for over 50 years. Their experience is a valuable part of my team," Mr. Green said.
The Fish Shack is located in the old Nelson Insurance building on Gordon Street. Hours of operation are 4-10 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. until sold out on Saturday, and 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. the first Sunday of each month. The phone number is 597-0084.
