Scam warning

The McDuffie County Sheriff's Department is warning area residents, especially the elderly, of a scam being perpetrated in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. Maj. Ronnie Williamson with the McDuffie County Sheriff's Department said a group of people is fraudulently representing themselves as employees of a power company or gas company and having residents exit their homes to discuss the installation of underground utilities. Once outside, another person enters the home for the purposes of theft. Investigator Larry Adaway said legitimate employees of these companies would be in a company truck, wear uniforms and carry proper identification. Anyone with any questions should always contact the company or law enforcement for verification. Inv. Adaway said if someone suspicious comes to your door - even if they leave after you question them about credentials - please call police so they can develop a description of possible offenders. Inv. Adaway can be reached at 595-2040, Ext. 229, with any information.
