It sounds like a lot of money.
And, admittedly, when you are talking about our tax dollars, $15,000-$20,000 is nothing to laugh at.
However, the money local governments should pay to Atlanta-based Bryant & Associates is a worthwhile investment in McDuffie County's future.
Under a proposal outlined in June, the consultant would help lay the groundwork for the planning and building of the county's judicial center.
Jud Bryant said his company would meet with county staff to get a feel for what should -- and should not -- be included in the building.
The Bryant initiative would be the second long-term planning effort underway in the county. Athens-based consultant Chasman & Associates is mapping the county's capital needs for the next two decades.
And what it means is simple: the planning that is done now will save taxpayers money down the road. With a clear and concise map for future buildings, roads and other facilities, local leaders will know where they are going and how much it will take to get there.
Then it will be up to taxpayers to make sure they get there in a fiscally conservative way.
